Effective Literacy Website #5

Ken Nesbitt’s Poetry4Kids (poetry4kids.com) is an engaging literacy website that allows students to view and interact with poetry. Ken Nesbitt is a poet who writes funny, quirky poetry that children and adults alike love. He keeps his site updated with new poems that he writes and gives a quick backstory about each one. Teachers are allowed to distribute these poems in their classrooms, as long as they are not profiting from them. One of the great features of this website is a section titled “Poetry Writing Lessons for Kids.” This section has so many resources for students, with everything from “How to Write an Onomatopoeia Poem” to “Evoking the Senses in a Poem.” Each lesson has a brief overview of the topic, and then a couple of exercises for children to practice using the skill. These would also be great for teachers and parents to use to encourage writing poetry!

Poetry4Kids makes reading poetry fun and exciting, with a section called “Poetry Games.” In this section there are many word-related games such as “Word Buster” and “Word Balloon.” The site also features a poetry podcast, in which audio recordings of poetry are available. Another great feature is the rhyming dictionary on the site, which would be great for writers who are attempting to make a rhyming poem but are stuck on a word! It would also be great for kids to practice using rhyming words, or be used as an introduction to rhyming. When a word is inputted into the rhyming dictionary, words are shown and organized by number of syllables.
