The webpage I have selected for my fifth review of effective literacy sites is the Reading Eggs (https://readingeggs.com) website. This site is full of color, is very inviting to the eyes and caters to children/parent of children ages two through thirteen. The Reading Eggs motto can be found on its homepage tab and states that they provide interesting and engaging online reading activities and games. However, all of these games and activities come at a price. An “All Access” subscription is $59.00 a year, an “All Access Family Plan” for two to four children is $89.00, and a monthly subscription will cost $9.95. All subscriptions grant the user access to Reading Eggs, Reading Eggs Junior, Reading Eggspress, as well as access to Mathseeds.
Diving further into the website, there are many tabs available to users. Some tabs include parents, homeschool, lesson overviews & plans, Reading Egg products, and a “Why Phonics” tab. I really like that there are so many options to choose from! This being one of the pricier sites, I’m glad a wide variety of literacy resources are offered. The parent tab offers games and activities such as digital flash cards on phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency all geared toward working at the pace of the child using this application. The homeschool tab offers resources to parents who are the sole educational outlet for their child. In this tab homeschool parents can find books, online reading lessons, and activities to enhance literacy. I feel that this is one of the more well-rounded resources the site has to offer.
In order for Reading Eggs to elicit use from educators, they have included lesson plans and lesson plan overviews. In these corresponding tabs, online activities, games targetting rhyming, read a-louds, and even punctuation can be found. All resources are very easy to navigate once the user has signed up and paid for the plan to fit their needs.
In my opinion, Reading Eggs is a great site to enhance literacy for children ages two through thirteen or older children reading in the same age bracket. This site offers a wide variety of resources and activities to introduce, practice, and enhance literacy. The only downside to this site is the pricing of subscriptions, so lower income households may not be able to afford it.
