Effective Literacy Website #3

The Reading Tub (thereadingtub.org) is a nonprofit organization that focuses on the overall mission of encouraging and providing reading material at home. This literacy website appears to be geared more towards children and their parents; however it can also be utilized as resource to educators. The Reading Tub offers book reviews, a blog, and book lists. The book reviews are very user-friendly with a variety of search criteria available. This makes it easy to search for books, especially when looking for books for a particular age group or a child’s interest. The book reviews are very comprehensive; complete with a summary, a section for parent perspective, reader enjoyment factors, content awareness factors, type of book, educational themes, reading level, recommendation age for read-to-self, recommendation age to read together, and purchase recommendation.

The blog section of the website is geared more towards adults, such as parents or educators. The most recent blogs are geared toward a “Book 2019 Gift Guide”, with topics such as “Gift Ideas for Cuddle Time” or “Gift Ideas for Kids + Teens who love play.” I think this blog is important because parents play a huge role in the literacy development of their child. The more they have access to engaging material and ideas about how to get them involved in literacy, the better! It truly is a win-win for all parties involved; child, parent, and teacher.

Another great section of The Reading Tub is the literacy section. This is also geared towards parents. It has a great area in which the website gives different ideas for reading activities to do at home, and tons of resources. Included in these resources are ways to initiate play that does not require a screen. I especially appreciated this section because it is teaching parents how to engage their students in a fun literacy game that does not require them to have a computer or internet access. Teachers could print these out and send home, and it would be accessible for all homes!
