The third website I chose to review is called ReadWorks (http://www.readworks.org). ReadWorks provides free resources and tools to improve teaching and learning for grades Kindergarten to 12th grade. These resources include eBooks, articles, reading passages, vocabulary activities, and much more. ReadWorks’ mission is to improve reading comprehension and close the student achievement gap by creating accessible content and tools that is research-based in cognitive science. The website is beautifully designed and provides visually appealing graphics. It is easy to navigate and fun to explore. In order to access their content, you need to create a free account.
There is one section of the website called the Teacher Guide, which includes a variety of useful resources to use in the classroom. ReadWorks is very versatile as you can create digital classes, print content and curriculum, or use a projector/smartboard to display the passages for classroom instruction. Finding certain reading passages is an easy process. You can use the search tool to type what you are looking for. Another option is that you can also filter your results according to text option, type of curriculum, topic, grade level, and even according to Lexile measure! With each passage, there are question sets, vocabulary activities, audio, and other types of supports included, to improve students’ reading comprehension.
ReadWorks is a fascinating website that is committed to improving reading comprehension. It offers an abundant amount of research-based resources for students in elementary, middle, and high school. I love that its layout is simple; it is easy on the eyes and very user friendly. I believe that educators, in particular, will love this website as I find that it is an effective literacy website. ReadWorks will definitely work in your classrooms!
