PBSkids: Effective Literacy Website #5
PBS
Kids (www.pbskids.org) is a great online
experience for primary level children who are eager to learn basic skills,
knowing many of the featured tv show characters such as Curious George and the
Sesame Street characters. Children will definitely enjoy playing the games offered
for free, especially from ages four and up. PBS Kids features videos, games,
and a bunch of other activities that center on popular PBS characters. On the
home page of PBS kids, you can choose your favorite show character you can
select on a rotating wheel. Selecting your character will route you to their
page to play fun and educational games.
PBS Kids provides basic educational lessons
using an easy to navigate website format with instructions given from character
voice overs. There are a lot you can do on this website like watching tv shows,
playing games, and downloading activities you can print out to work on when
offline. Most of the activities on the website are set into themes, including letter
recognition, numbers, shapes for primary level children. For intermediate level
students, some activities include language and reading, directions, word
recognition, and vocabulary.
PBS Kids is a very age-appropriate
website for children, which allows the exploration of fun learning activities,
games, and tv shows to constantly entertain children. This website would be a
great website to explore when at home with parents as parents monitor closely
to ensure children stay on task and focused on the website. I would say this is
a great resource, because of the popular characters that have made such a great
impact on learning in school.
