Teach Your Monster To Read (https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/)
is an award-winning literacy website designed for beginning readers and readers
who could benefit from extra reading practice. The site is 100% free when
accessing it via a computer, and is very user friendly. Teach Your Monster To
Read immerses children in variety of games that are based on their current
reading level. The students get to choose and adorn their own “monster” to
conquer the different games with and they really enjoy that touch of
personalization and ownership.
A great
feature on this site is that the teacher is able to create logins for the whole
class, as well as customize the reading ability of each student. The teacher is
also able to put these students into groups, which works well when having a
computer station during reading centers or Daily 5. When the student logs on,
he or she is directed to the game level that the teacher designated. There is
no guesswork for the student and it minimizes the student’s chances of playing
a game that is too easy/hard for him or her.
Teach
Your Monster To Read pairs well with phonics lessons or as a great send-home
resource for parents to use with their children. Scaffolding is built-in and
the students move up at their own level, which relieves that task from the teacher.
I personally love that this site is heavy on phonics because beginning readers
need all the practice they can get, and this particular website allows them to
do so in a very engaging manner.
